Siemens Healthineers will invest $43.6 million to expand its manufacturing and research operations at the Dunavant Drive facility in Rockford, Blount County, Tennessee, according to an announcement from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (tnecd.com). The expansion targets the company’s Molecular Imaging PET Detector Center at that site, where the company conducts R&D and produces materials for PET detector technology. Siemens Healthineers said the project will create more than 90 jobs over the next five years and allow the launch of new PET/CT product lines.

What it means

The Rockford facility will gain increased production capacity for PET detectors, which capture gamma rays emitted following radiopharmaceutical injections. PET/CT scanners then convert those signals into images used to measure metabolic activity and identify disease, including cardiac conditions, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer. The expansion is intended to support new PET/CT product lines, according to the company. Tennessee has seen continued investment in medical and industrial manufacturing; a related expansion in the state’s broader manufacturing base includes Hyosung HICO’s $157 million investment to expand its Memphis transformer plant, adding 240 jobs and 50% more capacity.
