Allison Transmission, headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, announced October 13, 2025, that it received a $97 million contract to support the U.S. Army’s Abrams Main Battle Tank program. The contract covers delivery of Allison’s X1100 cross-drive transmission, which has powered the Abrams platform for nearly five decades. Allison said the X1100 integrates steering, braking, and gear shifting into a single compact unit.

What it means

The contract continues Allison’s role as the transmission supplier for the Abrams program, which the company said dates to the tank’s origins in the 1970s. Dana Pittard, Allison’s Vice President for Defense Programs, said in the release that the X1100 has “enabled the Abrams to maneuver with precision and resilience in the world’s most demanding environments, when failure is not an option.” Beyond production, Allison has supported repair operations at the Army’s Anniston depot and provided diagnostics, components, and service protocols under the Army’s right-to-repair initiative. The company said it has also made investments in electric hybrid propulsion, digital diagnostics, and modular drivetrain systems.
