Constellation Signs 20-Year Nuclear Deal With Google

Constellation Energy Corp. announced a 20-year power purchase agreement with Google on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, to support 890 MW of new nuclear generation capacity within the PJM Interconnection region. The utility plans to invest $4.3 billion to uprate 11 existing nuclear units located across Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, with the first capacity additions expected to come online in 2028.

What it means

The agreement addresses a documented shortfall of approximately 6.8 GW of new capacity in the PJM market, driven by rising demand from data centers. Constellation stated that the deal responds to PJM’s “Bring Your Own Power” proposal and aligns with White House pledges to protect ratepayers. The company also entered a separate 15-year supply agreement with Google covering 2,700 MW across the broader PJM market.

Constellation said the project will sustain roughly 4,400 existing jobs and create approximately 7,200 temporary construction positions. The utility plans to deploy Google Cloud and AI technologies, including Gemini Enterprise agentic workflows, across its energy operations. An expanded five-year technology agreement covers AI applications for site selection, power flow modeling, permitting, interconnection planning, generation optimization, and infrastructure security. The deal includes operational load-shaping and demand-response capabilities designed to reduce consumption during periods of grid stress.

This follows a Sept. 30, 2026, announcement in which Constellation signed a 20-year PPA with Amazon for a 190-MW expansion of the Calvert Cliffs plant in Maryland. That Amazon deal involves a $3 billion investment, with new capacity expected online between 2030 and 2032. PJM Interconnection delayed a reliability backstop procurement auction after the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission partly approved it on Sept. 29, 2026. Constellation shares rose almost 14% in morning trading following the Google announcement.
