Hitachi Energy announced on September 15 that it will build a new transformer manufacturing facility in Gallman, Mississippi. The company committed $528 million to the project, marking its largest single investment in U.S. manufacturing history. Construction is scheduled to begin late this year, with production slated to start in 2029.
What it means
The new plant will double Hitachi Energy’s transformer production capacity in the United States. Once operational, all transformer manufacturing will move from the company’s existing Crystal Springs facility to the Gallman site, which is located 6.5 miles away. The Gallman campus will be more than twice the size of the current plant.
This project is part of a broader U.S. manufacturing expansion program valued at approximately $1.5 billion. Other major components of that expansion are located in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Tennessee. Hitachi Energy stated the investment aligns with strategic initiatives promoted by the governments of Japan and the United States, as well as goals set by the Trump administration and Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves.
The facility is expected to create over 700 jobs, according to the company’s initial announcement. Governor Reeves cited more than 650 new positions in his remarks. The investment supports domestic supply chains for critical grid infrastructure. Steel, rare earth and defense firms advance multi-billion dollar U.S. manufacturing projects, reflecting a wider trend of industrial capital deployment across the country.
