Hitachi Energy announced on August 20, 2025, that it will invest an initial $97 million to expand manufacturing operations at its facility in Alamo, Tennessee, in Crockett County. The expansion will add capacity for transformer components, including high-voltage direct current (HVDC) bushings, and will create 100 new jobs. Hitachi Energy, the energy arm of the Switzerland-headquartered Hitachi Group, said the Alamo plant plays a role in supplying components to customers across the U.S. and internationally.

What it means

Upon completion, Hitachi Energy will be the second-largest employer in Crockett County. Steve McKinney, head of transformers, North America at Hitachi Energy, said the facility is intended to meet growing energy demand from AI as well as grid expansion and modernization, and that the investment represents a long-term commitment to the Crockett County community. Gov. Bill Lee described the project as a significant investment in rural Tennessee.

The announcement adds to a pattern of Japanese-affiliated industrial presence in Tennessee. More than 200 Japanese companies operate across the state, accounting for more than 57,000 jobs and $20 billion in capital investment, according to the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, which identified Japan as Tennessee’s top partner for foreign direct investment.
