Honda is finalizing plans to build a new vehicle assembly plant in Ohio, with construction costs potentially reaching $2.5 billion. The facility would become the automaker’s eighth assembly location in North America and is likely to begin operations by 2030. Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe indicated in July that the company was weighing another U.S. plant, and Ohio has emerged as the top choice for the project.

What it means

The new facility would focus exclusively on hybrid-vehicle assembly, marking a strategic shift after Honda canceled development of three electric vehicles slated for U.S. construction earlier in 2026. The company projected a significant financial hit for 2026 due to volatile U.S. EV markets, tariffs, and changing consumer tastes in China. By expanding domestic hybrid production, Honda aims to increase output without relying on imports subject to tariffs.

Honda currently operates seven assembly plants in North America, with four located in the United States: two in Ohio, one in Indiana, and one in Alabama. These facilities are running at approximately 90 percent capacity, producing profitable models including the CR-V, Accord, Civic, Odyssey, and Pilot. The new plant would support Honda’s plan to introduce 15 models globally by 2030. Potential production lines include the proposed three-row “Acura XL,” expected to begin production in 2029, and the Honda “Pilot XXL,” tentatively scheduled for 2032. Prototypes shown recently include a Honda hybrid sedan and an Acura hybrid SUV, and the company is reportedly considering building a lifted Accord SUV.

The expansion coincides with efforts to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Honda’s next-generation hybrid system aims to increase fuel efficiency by 10 percent and cut costs by 30 percent. To support these goals, Honda has asked suppliers for price reductions totaling $9.4 billion by 2030.
