LG Energy Solution announced on August 18, 2026, that it has begun production at its new battery facility in Lansing, Michigan. The company stated that the plant, located on a 226-acre site, will manufacture large-format lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) cells for energy storage systems and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cells for electric vehicles. LG Energy Solution said the facility currently employs about 900 people and has received more than $2 billion in investment since 2022.

The Lansing plant adds specific capacity to LG Energy Solution’s North American footprint, targeting 35 gigawatt-hours of annual battery-making capacity at full-scale production. According to the company, the facility will produce LFP cells that LG Energy Solution Vertech integrates into complete systems for utility, grid-scale storage, and commercial or industrial applications. DTE Energy said it will use batteries built at the Lansing facility for future energy storage projects. The plant also produces NMC cells for Toyota, which will power vehicles including the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown, Kentucky.
LG Energy Solution stated that by the end of 2026, it plans to reach a total of 50 gigawatt-hours of LFP cell-making capacity across North America. The company said this expansion will bring its global energy storage system capacity located in North America to 80 percent. LG Energy Solution projected that its Michigan workforce will grow to more than 3,300 employees by the end of 2026, placing the company among the state’s top 50 employers. The Lansing facility is one of three wholly owned plants operated by the company in the region, alongside facilities in Holland, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, as well as two joint venture facilities in Ohio and Tennessee.
