MassDOT, CSX Sign Deal for Pittsfield Rail Upgrades

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and CSX have executed an agreement to modernize rail infrastructure in Pittsfield. The partnership focuses on constructing a siding and other track enhancements designed to support permanent seasonal service for the Berkshire Flyer. This passenger line currently operates weekend trips between New York City and Pittsfield, having added an extra round trip earlier this year.

What it means

The infrastructure work targets increased rail capacity and seeks to minimize operational conflicts between freight trains and passenger services. MassDOT has allocated $31 million for these improvements within its Capital Investment Plan covering fiscal years 2027 through 2031. The department is also assessing the feasibility of installing a new platform at Pittsfield Station. These actions follow a 2024 rail operations modeling study that pinpointed necessary upgrades in the region.

Andy Daly, CSX senior director of passenger rail operations, noted the value of the collaboration: “This project demonstrates what strong public-private partnership and targeted infrastructure investment can accomplish.” Separately, the Federal Railroad Administration provided approximately $2 billion to Amtrak for new Siemens Airo trainsets. These vehicles will serve Compass Rail routes in Massachusetts, including the Berkshire Flyer, as well as the initial phase of the planned West-East Rail corridor linking Boston, Springfield, and New Haven.
