NY Creates and Micron Technology, Inc. enrolled the first cohort of 10 apprentices into their joint workforce development program at the Albany NanoTech Complex in New York. The initiative, announced by Governor Kathy Hochul in April, prepares technicians for roles at Micron’s fabrication facilities under sponsorship from the New York State Department of Labor.
What it means
The 16-month apprenticeship is built on NY Creates’ Industrial Manufacturing Technician Registered Apprenticeship Program. Participants receive coursework from Hudson Valley Community College while working alongside Micron mentors and employees. The program recruits candidates from Career and Technical Education programs across the state to support domestic memory manufacturing expansion.
This effort aligns with broader federal investments in industrial workforce development, such as the Department of Energy’s $100 million nuclear safety training program. Graduates may pursue technician positions at Micron’s Clay, New York megafab site. Partners supporting the initiative include NNME Northeast, the Center for Economic Growth, Manufacturers Talent Institute – MACNY, and Empire State Development.
