Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced on January 22, 2026, that OC Oerlikon intends to expand its manufacturing capacity in Michigan to meet growing customer demand. The Swiss-headquartered industrial technology company currently operates facilities in Plymouth and Troy, producing advanced powders and coating technologies for defense, aerospace, energy, automotive, and additive manufacturing sectors. Whitmer visited the Plymouth site during the announcement, which marks a follow-up to Oerlikon’s 2017 investment and subsequent 2018 expansion into an advanced materials and research center in Plymouth.

What it means

Oerlikon stated that its Michigan operations are a cornerstone of its North American strategy. The company is currently assessing further expansion in the region to address future customer needs, building on its existing footprint that employs nearly 300 people across multiple locations. According to the company, average compensation and benefits for these employees approach $100,000 annually. Any potential state support for this new investment will be subject to review by the Michigan Strategic Fund Board.

Oerlikon operates in 38 countries with approximately 9,500 employees worldwide. The Plymouth facility specifically produces components for turbine engines and other high-performance applications. Governor Whitmer said that “Michigan has always been home to cutting-edge research and innovation that drives our state forward and grows our economy.”
