Quantinuum finalized a $100 million agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s CHIPS Research and Development Office on Sept. 8, 2026, as first reported by prnewswire.com. The Broomfield, Colorado-based company will use the federal funding to advance research and domestic manufacturing of fault-tolerant trapped-ion quantum computers. Quantinuum was the sole recipient of CHIPS R&D funding for a trapped-ion architecture.

What it means

The award supports the fabrication of next-generation ion traps and control electronics using 300mm wafer technology, developed in partnership with GlobalFoundries. Quantinuum also collaborates with Monarch Quantum to develop and manufacture the lasers and optical components required for these systems. The funding is designated specifically for U.S. quantum semiconductor manufacturing activities.

Dr. Rajeeb Hazra, President and CEO of Quantinuum, said the award validates the company’s leadership in trapped-ion quantum computing. Tim Breen, CEO of GlobalFoundries, noted that manufacturing will be critical as the industry moves closer to commercial scale. The agreement follows a letter of intent announced in May. Quantinuum employs over 800 people globally and operates facilities in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Qatar, and Singapore.
