President Donald Trump announced on Monday afternoon that Mesabi Metallics will construct a $15 billion steel manufacturing facility in Lee County, Iowa. The White House hosted the announcement at the Oval Office alongside Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, and Attorney General Brenna Bird. The project represents the largest single steel plant investment in the United States.

What it means

The facility is designed to produce 10 million tons of steel annually once fully operational by 2030. According to the White House, the plant aims to revitalize domestic steel production and support the U.S. defense sector. The operation will source raw iron ore from a Mesabi Metallics mine in Nashwauk, Minnesota. A separate $3 billion investment is dedicated to completing that mining infrastructure.

The project is projected to create between 5,000 and 6,000 construction jobs during the building phase. Upon completion, the plant will provide approximately 1,750 permanent positions in Iowa. Representative Miller-Meeks stated that the facility brings “more than 1,700 permanent, good-paying jobs” to Lee County. Mesabi Metallics is owned by the India-based Essar Group.
