Rick Siger announced Nov. 6 that Pennsylvania approved a $980,500 Industrial Sites Reuse Program grant for the former Municipal Incinerator property on North Sherman Street in Wilkes-Barre. The Greater Wilkes-Barre Industrial Fund will use the funding to address contaminated soil at the Luzerne County site.
What it means
The cleanup is planned to create nearly three acres of cleared and graded commercial land. Other portions of the property will be capped for parking or vehicle staging, and the work will expand commercial activity on an adjoining parcel.
The Shapiro Administration said the project is intended to support investment, business expansion and job creation in Luzerne County. The Industrial Sites Reuse Program offers loans and grants for environmental assessment and remediation work tied to contaminated industrial properties and reuse of dormant land.
