Sempra Infrastructure announced a 20-year liquefied natural gas sales and purchase agreement with Petrobras, the state-controlled oil company of Brazil. The contract secures supply from the Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project in Jefferson County, Texas. Under the terms, Sempra will deliver 0.8 million tonnes per annum of LNG to Petrobras. The deal marks the first time a South American energy company has joined Sempra Infrastructure’s portfolio of long-term LNG customers.
What it means
The agreement locks in demand for gas produced at the Port Arthur facility, which is expanding its liquefaction capacity through multiple construction phases. Phase 1 of the project, currently under construction, will add 13 million tonnes per annum of capacity across two trains. Train 1 is scheduled to begin commercial operations by the end of 2027, followed by train 2 in 2028. Phase 2, which also reached a positive final investment decision in September 2025, will add another 13 million tonnes per annum via two additional trains. Train 3 is expected to start operations in 2030, with train 4 following in 2031. Once complete, the total liquefaction capacity at Port Arthur LNG will reach 26 million tonnes per annum.
Sempra Infrastructure stated that future phases of the Port Arthur project are in early development stages. The company noted that its gas supplies serve markets in both the Atlantic and Pacific Basins. Justin Bird, CEO of Sempra Infrastructure, said the partnership with Petrobras represents an important milestone for the company’s growing LNG business. Meanwhile, Petrobras has expanded its own international footprint, recently entering eight blocks offshore Côte d’Ivoire.
