Merck announced a $2.9 billion investment to expand its vaccine and medicine manufacturing operations in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, on October 14, 2026. Governor Josh Shapiro and Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Secretary Rick Siger unveiled the plan, which includes a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new ADVANCE facility at Merck’s West Point campus. The pharmaceutical company plans to complete the expansion by the end of 2030.
What it means
The investment will fund upgrades to the West Point campus and the Springhouse Innovation Park (SHIP) research and development facility. According to the announcement, Merck is dedicating $550 million specifically to these two sites to support medicine discovery, robotics integration, and AI-enabled drug research. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is contributing $5 million through a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant to support the project.
The West Point campus currently produces over 200 million doses of vaccines annually. This expansion adds to Merck’s 130-year operational history in the state. Governor Shapiro stated that his administration has secured more than $43 billion in private sector investments and created nearly 29,000 new jobs since taking office. The life sciences sector in Pennsylvania includes approximately 3,900 companies, employs more than 110,000 residents, and contributes $73 billion to the state’s economy. In the last five years, the state has secured more than 20,000 life sciences patents, ranking sixth nationally.
The state budget for fiscal year 2026-27 allocates $125 million for the Innovate in PA 2.0 program, which includes grants for clinical trials, life sciences pathways, and challenge initiatives. Other companies cited as expanding their Pennsylvania operations include Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly, Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories, B. Braun, and GSK.
