Fairbanks Morse Defense received a $99.09 million contract from Naval Sea Systems Command for emergency diesel generator overhauls on six U.S. nuclear submarines through 2030. The follow-on, sole-source award covers repairs, replacement parts and labor. Fairbanks Morse Defense will perform the EDG work using robotic welding and its Pit Stop maintenance method.

What it means

The Navy’s service-life mitigation strategy seeks to keep Ohio- and Los Angeles-class submarines operating for as long as 14 additional years. Fairbanks Morse Defense said robotic welding can cut manual welding time by up to two-thirds.

The company is using a maintenance approach co-developed with the U.S. Navy to shorten depot work from months to weeks. Fairbanks Morse Defense previously completed EDG overhauls for two Ohio-class submarines and one Los Angeles-class submarine under an earlier NAVSEA contract.
