Google and Constellation Energy announced a long-term clean energy collaboration on Oct. 6, 2026, that will add 890 megawatts of new nuclear capacity to the PJM Interconnection grid. The agreement includes a 20-year power purchase agreement designed to fund investments across 11 Constellation-owned nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The companies stated the deal will sustain approximately 4,400 existing jobs and create roughly 7,200 new construction positions during the upgrade period.
What it means
The partnership directs more than $4.3 billion in new investment from Constellation toward modernizing operating nuclear facilities. According to the companies, these investments will increase thermal and electrical efficiency at the plants, unlocking additional reliable power output. The upgrades involve modernizing turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems at the existing sites.
The 890 megawatts of incremental capacity is equivalent to several small modular reactors or a large new conventional reactor. A separate 15-year energy supply agreement covers an additional 2,700 megawatts within PJM’s fleet. The companies also expanded a five-year technology alliance, selecting Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise to help establish an “AI for energy” blueprint intended to accelerate capacity delivery and optimize asset dispatch.
The initiative supports the federal government’s UPRISE program goals and responds to PJM’s “Bring Your Own Power” proposal. The approach aligns with the White House Ratepayer Protection Pledge, with Google committing to bring new capacity to the system without passing costs to residential customers. Amanda Peterson Corio of Google stated the company is “committed to meeting our growth responsibly by actively investing in clean, reliable power that brings new capacity to our nation’s grids.” Joe Dominguez of Constellation said preserving and expanding the existing nuclear fleet is critical to meeting energy needs while keeping costs affordable for homes and businesses.
