Twelve opened AirPlant One in Moses Lake, Washington on June 10, 2026. The facility is the first commercial-scale facility in the United States to produce E-Jet fuel and E-Naphtha. The plant utilizes a power-to-liquid process that captures carbon dioxide from the air and combines it with water and renewable electricity via an electrolyzer to create drop-in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and chemical feedstocks. Alaska Airlines will operate regular domestic flights using the SAF manufactured at the site, which meets ASTM International certification standards for use in commercial aircraft without modifications to engines or infrastructure.

What it means

The facility produces E-Jet fuel that Twelve states has up to 90% lower lifecycle CO2 emissions compared to conventional jet fuel. The output complies with ASTM D7566 Annex A1 specifications. Alaska Airlines and Microsoft jointly committed to purchasing output from the facility in 2022; Microsoft utilizes a book-and-claim accounting model for its SAF agreement to reduce reported emissions associated with business travel, while Singapore regulations require physical loading of SAF at Changi Airport. Twelve’s eManufacturing process also yields E-Naphtha, a drop-in substitute for traditional naphtha used in plastics, packaging, solvents, and synthetic fibers. The company has previously delivered proof-of-concept projects to Mercedes-Benz, PANGAIA, and Procter & Gamble.

Nicholas Flanders, Co-Founder and CEO of Twelve, said the project was based on the thesis that fuels powering the global economy could be made from renewable electricity and air anywhere in the world. Ryan Spies, Alaska Airlines Managing Director of Sustainability, stated the airline is committed to supporting in-state production of SAF as the best technology for the industry to reach net-zero carbon emissions. Twelve reported a survey of over 1,000 U.S. consumers found that 74% would choose a CO2-based product over an oil-derived one if quality is equal, and 90% said it is important for brands to eliminate fossil fuels from everyday products. Consumer interest in CO2-based products was highest in apparel, accessories, and footwear at 67%, followed by technology and personal electronics at 57%, and beauty and personal care products at 53%. Twelve also noted the potential for up to 10 years of price predictability for E-Jet fuel.
