David Toland announced that the Air Innovation Range in Kansas program opened applications October 22, 2026, for a one-time $2 million grant program supporting Kansas-based Unmanned Aircraft System test ranges and Beyond Visual Line of Sight operations. AIR KS said applicants can seek funds for projects that expand UAS infrastructure and operational capacity. Applications close November 22, and awardees are scheduled to be announced in December.

What it means

The grants can fund navigation infrastructure, technology systems, software improvements, equipment, professional services, travel, project management and other infrastructure or operational costs. AIR KS said supported work includes BVLOS navigation and operating capabilities, research and industry use, commercialization activity, and UAS test-range operations and maintenance in Kansas.

Airport authorities and sponsors, municipalities, counties, other government entities, private companies, nonprofits, colleges and universities, tribal governments, and partnerships among eligible groups may apply. Applicants must demonstrate the technical, management and financial ability to carry out the proposed work.

Projects must be completed within eight months after funding is received. AIR KS will release half of an award when it is made and provide the balance after a project reaches at least 50% completion.
