Micron Technology, Inc. will invest up to $2.17 billion to expand its semiconductor manufacturing facility at 9600 Godwin Dr. in Manassas, Va., Governor Glenn Youngkin announced December 30, 2024. The expansion will modernize Micron’s existing Manassas plant to produce DRAM memory targeting domestic automotive, aerospace, defense, and industrial markets. The project will create 340 new jobs. Micron has operated in Manassas for 22 years and is described by the company as the only U.S.-based manufacturer of memory.

What it means

The Manassas expansion modernizes an existing facility rather than building new, directing DRAM production toward domestic end markets in automotive, aerospace, defense, and industrial sectors. Micron will be eligible for a Virginia MEI Commission-approved special appropriation of up to $70 million, contingent on meeting the investment threshold of more than $2.1 billion and creating 340 jobs; the appropriation is subject to approval by the Virginia General Assembly. The investment is also supported by the federal CHIPS Act alongside incentives from the Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Manassas.

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the City of Manassas and the MEI Commission to secure the project. Workforce support will be provided through the Virginia Talent Accelerator Program, a VEDP program created in collaboration with higher education partners that Business Facilities ranked the No. 1 Customized Workforce Training Program in the United States in 2024; all services are provided at no cost to qualified companies. Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron’s President and CEO, said the company is “uniquely positioned to bring state-of-the-present memory manufacturing to the U.S., strengthening the country’s technology leadership and fostering advanced innovation.”
